Rudy Van Gelder - a lot of his stuff is audibly distorted, and when did he ever do an even acceptable recording of a piano?

Yes, multi-track did come along and changed the landscape.
But I think that with few exceptions the recording *quality* did
not substantially improve or change. In some cases it became
somewhat worse as the result of all that solid state crap and multi-track
mono mixes...
