Alas, the 838 is a variable-mu 211. Of course, SOME people tried it
anyway -- in spite of logic and reason -- and thought it sounded great,
so as we all know, YMMV.

I suspect that is a problem if you check the tube curves
as you don't have a great amount of trans-conductance.
You need to have + grid current for any kind plate current.
